This position provides paramedical care for county inmates.

Major Duties

  • Responds to and treats inmate and employee medical emergencies.
  • Makes arrangements for the transport of inmates to the hospital as appropriate.
  • Completes all required reports; maintains inmate charts and records.
  • Receives verbal orders from physicians and transcribes physician order sheets.
  • Orders prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment.
  • Prepares and administers medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Verifies the identification of inmates prior to the administration of medication or other treatments.
  • Maintains accurate and complete narcotics records.
  • Admits, transfers, and discharges inmates.
  • Assists physicians and dentists with patient care.
  • Perform inmate restraint assessments on new inmates.
  • Monitors and documents inmate behavior when administering psychotropic medications.
  • Responds to inmate medical requests; makes assessments; determines the need for referrals; administers treatment.
  • Assists correctional officers as needed.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the paramedical care of patients.
  • Knowledge of medical screening protocols.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise reports.
  • Skill in the care of patients.
  • Skill in the preparation and delivery of training and instruction.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have one ( 1 ) year of experience.
  • Must have an EMS certification.

Complexity/Scope of Work - The work consists of related duties in the provision of health screening and paramedical care to inmates. The unique needs of each inmate contribute to the complexity of the position. - The purpose of this position is to provide paramedical care to inmates.  Success in this position contributes to the health and safety of inmates.

*Physical Demands/Work Environment* Occasionally - Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles. - Moving oneself in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces. - Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions. - Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. - Working in low temperatures. - Working in high temperatures. - Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind. - Working in noisy environments. - Working in small and/or enclosed spaces. - Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. - Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds. - Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds. - Heavy work that includes carrying objects up to 100 pounds or more.

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Must possess a valid and current Texas Driver's License or a Texas Identification card.
  • The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.

Valid Texas Driver's License or Texas Identification Card If the applicant holds an out-of-state Driver's License or Identification card, a State of Texas Driver's License or Texas Identification Card must be obtained prior to employment.
