Founded as a volunteer company in 1895 and formally established by village ordinance on November 7, 1898, Riverside became one of the first towns of its size in Illinois to pay its firefighters, beginning in 1901. Over the decades it grew from horse-drawn hose carts to motorized apparatus and, in 1974, added EMS with an early converted-station-wagon ambulance.
Today the department operates from two stations: Station 1 at 31 Riverside Road and Station 2 at 10 Pine Avenue. It runs a combination staffing model with paid personnel, and paramedic-level ambulance transport is provided under contract.
