The purpose of this classification is to perform firefighting and rescue operations in a variety of public safety and emergency situations, such as fires, hazardous materials spills, vehicle accidents, and related situations.
This posting will remain open on a continuous basis. Applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be contacted as vacancies become available.
A candidate who meets the minimum qualifications will hold a Highschool Diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years old and insurable by the City’s insurance carrier, complete a pre-employment drug screen and physical, and complete all steps in the multi-step screening process. Candidate must show successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and submit a copy of the official CPAT form with their Firefighter/Fire Medic online application.
Preferred candidates will hold Alabama Fire Fighter I/II and EMT Basic certifications. Additional compensation will be offered for candidates who hold Alabama Paramedic license and may be based on years of firefighting experience.
Firefighter: $18.91/hr - $24.43/hr Fire Medic: $21.02/hr - $27.18/hr *Based on 2808 hours worked per year.
The Essential Functions listed below are a combination of firefighter and fire medic responsibilities. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by vocational/technical training in firefighting, hazardous materials, and basic emergency medical care.
Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama driver’s license; valid Alabama Fire Fighter I/II certification; Alabama Basic EMT certification. Valid Alabama Paramedic license through the Alabama Department of Public Health, current ACLS, PALS, and BLS certifications, current NREMT Paramedic License preferred.Candidate must show successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and submit a copy of the official CPAT form with their Firefighter/Fire Medic online application.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force or more. Work requires the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions; fire suppression, emergency response, and fire inspection tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
