Operates on a 48/96 schedule.

Definition : The purpose of this position is to provide emergency medical care, save lives, and protect property.  This is accomplished by responding to emergency medical and fire calls for service. Other responsibilities include providing public relations and education; inspecting and cleaning emergency equipment; maintaining operations base unit; and performing other duties as requested.

Essential Job Functions : ** ** The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all duties, and may be required to perform additional, position related tasks.

  • Responds to emergency medical  calls by monitoring radio communications; driving an ambulance or fire apparatus; providing necessary medical care per state and department protocol according to qualifications/licensure; operating medical equipment; extricating and lifting patients; documenting services and procedures; providing excellent customer service; documenting calls for service; inputting information into computer program(s); establishing or assuming incident command and using the incident command system.

  • Responds to emergency fire calls by driving emergency vehicle(s); wearing personal protective equipment; performing firefighter activities; operating pumps and related equipment; laying hose; performing fire attack, containment, and extinguishment tasks; assisting with Haz-Mat situations; writing and entering Fire and EMS reports into the current tracking system; establishing or assuming incident command and using the incident command system.

  • Provides public fire prevention and fire education presentations; distributing brochures; performing demonstrations; researching statistics; and providing CPR and First Aid classes.

  • Inspect and clean emergency equipment by providing daily unit checks; disinfecting interior of emergency vehicles; cleaning unit interior after each call; washing outside of unit daily or as needed; restocking unit after each call; and cleaning fire equipment after each use.

  • Maintains fire station(s) by sweeping and mopping floors; washing, drying, and putting away dishes and laundry; cleaning showers and restrooms; stocking medical supplies; cleaning bay area; cleaning and maintaining the fire station grounds.

  • Inventory management/tracking for assigned fire apparatus and equipment; Monitors reorder points and initiates action to replenish stock. Reconciles discrepancies in inventories and notifies supervisor of irregularities. May lead, guide, and train entry level employees to perform related work. 

  • Read, interpret, and respond to email correspondence. Understand department and County policies and procedures, state laws, and operating procedures. Understand and follow the chain of command.

Other Requirements: The incumbent in this position must comply with the established safety guidelines of the County.

Minimum Qualifications :  

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the date of hire.
  • High School Diploma, or GED equivalent
  • Must possess current NM EMT Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic License
  • Must possess a Valid CPR certification (AHA)

Preferred Qualifications: ( Must be obtained within the first year of hire) :

  • IFSAC Hazmat Awareness & Operations Certification, or equivalent
  • IFSAC Firefighter I Certification, or equivalent
  • IFSAC Firefighter II Certification, or equivalent
  • IS 100, 200, 700, and 2200.
  • Current DOT Physical
  • ACLS and PALS

**Conditions of Employment: ** _ ( _Final offer of employment is contingent upon the outcome of)

  • Incumbent must complete and pass a pre-employment background investigation and may be required to pass a drug analysis test.
  • Incumbent may be required to pass an MCFR physical ability test from available dates provided.

  • Applicant cannot have any felony convictions at any time.

  • Applicant cannot have any misdemeanor convictions within the preceding five (5) years.
  • Applicant cannot have any convictions of a crime of moral turpitude.

**Certificates and Licenses ** Must possess a valid Driver’s License at time of employment and be insurable for liability purposes; and the ability to obtain a New Mexico Class E Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire date.

** Supervisory Controls: ** Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Fire Captain who assigns work and training. However, the incumbent works with a high degree of independence and is required to make instantaneous decisions in emergency situations to protect lives and property. Activities are reviewed for appropriateness, soundness and conformance to laws, regulations, and accepted work practices. Investigative and incident reports are reviewed for completeness, technical accuracy, and compliance with established procedures.

Working Conditions : ** ** The majority of the work involves driving and conducting activities in open areas, in vehicles or in buildings under a wide variety of circumstances.  Outdoor work and driving are performed in all kinds of weather. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations, including attack with an ever-present danger of death or injury from physical assault or accident in the line of duty.
