Examples of Duties

The purpose of this position is to perform basic and advanced level assessment, treatment, stabilization and provides transportation as a Paramedic within the Emergency Medical Services Department. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Responds to emergency calls in a an ambulance and performs necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support; administers necessary emergency medical care, including the use of, but not limited to: transport ventilators, intravenous infusion pumps, suction units, immobilization equipment, syringes and medications, cardiac monitors/defibrillator/pacers, video laryngoscopes and other advanced airway equipment, and automatic chest compression devices.
• Performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols established by the department and the County’s Medical Director; administers cardiac and narcotic medications via intravenous line, administers specified solutions by intravenous infusion, performs pulmonary ventilations and obtains EKG’s for cardiac diagnostics.
• Performs patient assessment, basic life support techniques in accordance with local protocols including airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation;  oxygen administration; hemorrhage control; treatment for shock; bandaging and dressing injuries and splinting of fractures and dislocations; treatment of injuries to various parts of the body; provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries and burns; lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility, and extrication of patients from confined areas.
• Transports patients to local and regional medical facilities, maintaining contact with medical staff while in transport and assuring care of patient.
• Completes full patient care documentation through various paper and electronic based formats during and after calls for service including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability.
• Participates in a continuous training program to maintain certification and improve competence in medical technical work and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
• Inspects response vehicles and their emergency equipment, maintains proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.
• Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities; to include, but not limited to; sweeping, mopping, cleaning dishes, cleaning and sanitizing living spaces, and cleaning up around the outside of the facility.
• Participates in community outreach programs to promote safety and prevention awareness and to provide information on EMS services.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
• Over one year and up to and including two years of related experience.
• Performs very heavy work that involves exerting more than 120 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis.
• South Carolina State Paramedic Certification.
• National Registry of EMT, Paramedic Certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
• Basic Life Support.
• NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history. IMPORTANT: Submit a copy of your state and national registry certification card with application. Applications submitted without these items will not be considered.

Supplemental Information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
