Description

Performs intermediate protective services work primarily providing emergency medical services on an ambulance.  Assists with non-interior fire suppression to citizens, performs inspections, prevention, and public safety education services, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

Examples of Duties

  • Responds to emergency calls and performs emergency medical services including basic and advanced life support. - Responds to fire alarms and supports fire suppression to include exterior firefighting/rescues, tactical ventilation, salvage work, support of hazardous materials incidents/technical rescues, and first response in emergency situations.- Participates in continuing training and instruction program via individual study of technical materials and attending scheduled drills and classes to maintain physical fitness and agility. - Drives and/or operates various medical apparatus; ensures that emergency vehicles are completely stocked and maintained in a safe and efficient operational condition. - Performs station duties such as daily unit checks, equipment maintenance and cleaning of station and grounds.  - Performs non-emergency public services such as lift assists, stand-by for events, river duties on fire boat, etc., as needed.- Provides public safety education services to the community (makes presentations, gives station tours, speaks to outside groups and schools).- Supports emergency management activities and services as needed- Conducts emergency pre-planning, entry, exit procedures, and hazard/life safety awareness.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Virginia or National Registry EMT Intermediate or Paramedic certification upon hire- Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations preferred upon hire, required within one year of hire.- Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with zero or plus points.- Must meet and maintain training and education requirements for position. Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of fist aid and basic and advanced life support.- Knowledge of firefighting equipment and techniques.- Knowledge of hazardous materials, prevention and identification. Skills:

  • Strong communication and customer service skills- Computer and technology skills   Abilities:

  • Ability to endure physical and emotional challenges and to go without sleep for long periods of time. - Ability to use good judgement and remain calm in high-stress situations.- Ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills.- Ability to precisely and quickly perform mathematical calculations pertinent to ratio and proportion of medication and supplies used in patient care.- Ability to read road maps, drive emergency vehicles, accurately discern street signs and address numbers- Ability to read medication/prescription labels and directions for usage in quick, accurate and expedient manner.- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse patients, family members, caretakers, physicians, etc.- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, document all relevant information and complete various reports.- Ability to develop effective working relationships with internal and external customers.- Must demonstrate the ability to think/act quickly in all situations.

Supplemental Information

Work Environment:

  • Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or extreme heat, heights, odors, noise, dust, fumes, and hazardous materials.- Shift work including weekends, holidays, nights, and working beyond normal work schedule.- Must wear uniform including safety equipment. Essential Physical Activities:

  • Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, and depth perception.- Typical weight handled: up to 125 lbs. individually, up to 250 lbs. with assistance (lift, carry, and balance)
