General Definition of work

The Firefighter preforms responsible service work in fire profession and prevention. Does related work as required.   Is performed under the regular supervision of a Chief, Deputy Chief, or shift Officer.

Typical Task

Responds to alarms, drives, and operates equipment and related apparatus and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, advancing lines, entry, ventilation and salvage work, extrication, and emergency medical care of victims.

Assists in maintaining, cleaning, and repairing fire apparatus and equipment, and daily duties, cleaning fire stations and grounds.

Checks and flows fire hydrants yearly.

Does fire code inspections of business establishments and prepares pre-fire plans.

Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, inspects for smoke, gas leaks, carbon dioxide, secures and checks for hazards at vehicle accidents, etc.

Participates in continuing training in fire and Ems instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.

Conducts station tours for the public, schools, and community demonstrations and programs.

Performs related tasks, as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; general knowledge of technical firefighting principles and technique’s; and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of the street systems and physical layout of the city; general knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques and equipment; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, other entities  and the public; ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; possess a strong mechanical aptitude; ability to perform heavy manual labor; skill in operation of heavy emergency equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

· High school diploma or GED equivalent

· Valid Idaho driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within a timeframe established by the City

· Minimum of 40 hours of Essentials of Firefighting with certificate

· Ability to obtain IFSAC Firefighter I certification within the first year of employment

· Ability to obtain an Idaho EMT license within the first year of employment

Preferred & Desired Qualifications

· IFSAC Firefighter I certification

· IFSAC Firefighter II certification

· ICS-100, ICS-200, and NIMS 700

· Current Idaho EMT license

· Knowledge of the City of Burley street grid
