The Southaven Fire Department is currently accepting applications for paramedic from individuals who meet the following requirements:
- Applicant must be a Nationally Registered Paramedic and/or be able to gain reciprocity to the State of Mississippi Health Department for EMT-P in a timely manner.
- Applicant must obtain and maintain a MS EMS Driver License in order to drive an ambulance and/or other department vehicle under routine and emergency conditions.
- Applicants that have previously applied to the City of Southaven Fire Department must re-apply for consideration.
- Applications are only accepted via the City of Southaven website or at the reception desk on the first floor.
- Due to the volume of the applications, not all applicants will receive a response. Those chosen to proceed to the next step will be notified by mail or phone. Please do not contact the Fire Department or its offices to check on the status of an application unless instructed to do so.
- Do not submit certificates at this time.
- All candidates will take physical ability job related test as well as a cognitive skill test to proceed to the interview process. All candidates will be given direction and time to prepare for the tests prior to the actual date.

Essential Duties:
The paramedic administers advanced life support care to sick and injured persons in pre-hospital setting as authorized and directed by Medical Control Physician and local and state protocol:
- Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance as well as recognizing the need for additional resources. Administer basic and advanced life support measures in accordance with established policies and procedures; provide transportation to victims of medical or traumatic emergencies to the appropriate medical facility. Participate in other forms of emergent care and medical rescue as needed as well as other work required by the position.
- Communicates with Physician and other medical personnel via radio-telephone.

Have the ability to follow and apply the department SOG’s and EMS Protocol.

Must be able to learn and assist with ancillary fire ground operations up to level of training which may include basic auto extrication techniques, hazardous materials awareness & operations, rehab of personnel and other duties as assigned.

Other Duties:
- Shall have a general knowledge/operation of basic fire equipment carried on fire apparatus at the station they are assigned which shall include details to other stations.
- Shall be trained and have a thorough understanding of their role during medical incidents, mass casualty incidents, fire suppression operations, hazardous materials operations, and rescue operations including but not limited to rehabilitation of personnel, medical evaluation of personnel, scene safety, Incident Command System, personnel accountability, basic tools & equipment, SCBA bottle replacement, and other ancillary functions as assigned within the limits of their training.
- Must perform in a team concept within a structured organization.
- Must function in a firehouse setting, participating in all functions required to operate and maintain the station and equipment in a ready status.
- May perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency situations, physical fitness training or other training activities.
- Act effectively and efficiently in emergency and stressful situations.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.

All candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and a high school diploma or GED equivalent. All candidates will be required to pass a DOT physical examination, drug screen, and background check.
