Example of Duties

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under the direction of the Fire Lieutenant and Fire Captain, the Part-Time Firefighter responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents, providing basic and/or advanced life support, fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, and all-hazard response services. May assume responsibility as acting officer-in-charge (OIC) when directed by a Fire Lieutenant or Fire Captain. This position involves ongoing training, public education, equipment and facility maintenance, and interagency coordination. Part-Time Firefighters maintain operational readiness, uphold professional and ethical standards, and contribute to the Division’s mission to protect life, property, and the environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: Emergency Response

• Respond to fire, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials, and other all-hazard incidents.
• Provide advanced and/or basic life support in accordance with approved medical protocols.
• Perform fire suppression, ventilation, search and rescue, salvage, and overhaul operations.
• Participate in the incident accountability system, ensuring crew integrity and safety tracking during emergency operations.
• Operate apparatus, tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively.

• Wear and operate personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in accordance with NFPA standards. Preparedness and Readiness

• Conduct daily inspections of apparatus, equipment, PPE, and station facilities.

• Report deficiencies promptly and ensure corrective action.

• Maintain physical readiness in accordance with Division fitness standards. Prevention and Education

• Assist in public fire and life safety education, prevention programs, and community events.

• Support Division initiatives to reduce risk in the community. Training and Professional Development

• Participate in and complete required training to maintain operational proficiency.

• Maintain all continuing education units (CEUs) for fire and EMS in compliance with State and Division standards.

• Stay informed of current best practices, developments, and procedures. Documentation and Reporting

• Accurately complete incident, patient care, training, and equipment maintenance reports in the Division’s records management systems (NFIRS/NERIS-compliant).

• Submit documentation within required timeframes.
• Promptly communicate unusual or urgent situations to a superior officer.
• Ensure all documentation is accurate, complete, and submitted promptly.

• Notify a Fire Captain or Fire Lieutenant of incidents not covered by existing procedures. Compliance and Conduct

• Operate within City and Division policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and applicable laws.

• Comply with NFPA, OSHA, State, and local safety regulations.
• Maintain compliance with patient privacy laws (HIPAA) and Division medical control protocols.
• Exercise lead responsibility over assigned personnel when directed.
• Perform any other duties as assigned in support of Division operations.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must meet all qualifications for appointment as defined by the Civil Service Commission.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Age 18 or older.
• Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements, including physical ability testing, background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical/drug screening.

• Successful completion of probationary period requirements, including assigned training, task books, and performance benchmarks. LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid driver’s license and eligibility for coverage under the City’s vehicle insurance.

• State of Ohio certifications:
• Emergency Medical Technician (Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS).
• Firefighter II (NFPA 1001).
• Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) certification meeting NFPA 1002 driver/operator competencies within one (1) year of appointment.
• Hazardous Materials – Operations Level Training (NFPA 470).
• Current CPR certification.
• NIMS certifications: ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
• Maintain all required certifications and licenses as a condition of continued employment.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS: (Examples only; not all-inclusive) Knowledge of:

• Modern firefighting methods and related equipment use and maintenance.
• EMS protocols, advanced and/or basic life support procedures.
• Incident Command System (ICS) and related NIMS principles.
• Patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
• City geography, water supply systems, and mutual-aid response areas.

• City and Division policies, operating procedures, and applicable laws/regulations. Skill in:

• Operation of all Division vehicles and equipment.

• Use of firefighting, rescue, and EMS tools and devices (e.g., cardiac monitors, extrication equipment).
• Operation of thermal imaging cameras, atmospheric monitoring equipment, and ePCR technology.
• Use of computers and software for incident reporting, scheduling, and communication.

• Safe and effective operation in high-stress environments. Ability to:

• Perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods under hazardous conditions.

• Make sound decisions quickly under stress.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Maintain professionalism, teamwork, and situational awareness.
• Interact with the public using tact, empathy, and professionalism.
• Demonstrate ethical conduct, integrity, and accountability in all duties.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: (Examples only; not all-inclusive)

• Fire apparatus and emergency vehicles.
• EMS equipment: cardiac monitors, defibrillators, airway management devices, suction units.
• Fire suppression and rescue tools: spreaders, cutters, stabilization devices.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
• Computers, radios, and related communications technology.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION CRITERIA: Performance will be evaluated based on incident performance and adherence to protocols, quality and timeliness of patient care, compliance with safety standards and Division policies, accuracy and completeness of documentation, participation in training, readiness, and community engagement activities, professional conduct, and ability to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to Division goals.

Supplemental Information

Candidates must pass the FireTEAM written exam and the Firefighter Mile or CPAT physical ability test by the job closing date to be considered for this position in addition to completing a City of Perrysburg employment application.

Hourly Rate for FFII Certification and Basic EMT Certification: $20.86 Hourly Rate for FFII Certification and Paramedic Certification: $23.17
