Fire Prevention Inspector

The Savannah Fire Department is seeking a highly skilled individual to join their team as a Fire Prevention Inspector.  Under the supervision and direction of the Chief Fire Marshal, this position performs thorough inspections of various commercial occupancies and responsible for maintaining and enforcing Fire and Life Safety codes and standards within the city of Savannah for preservation of life and property by means of review, code research and interpretation, development, and approval of alternatives to requirements and coordination with other departments.

Essential Job Functions

• Evaluates, investigates, and responds to complaints and violations. Reviews contractor inspections for violations. Addresses the need for corrections and report as needed.
• Researches, interprets, and applies applicable codes to circumstances, questions, projects, events, systems, designs, structures or occupancy.
• Inspection of public, commercial, and multi-residential structures to ensure compliance with the International Fire Code as adopted.
• Conducts inspections of fire hazard complaints for compliance with jurisdiction, state, and federal regulations.
• Identifies corrective actions to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, regulations, and standards.
• Records plan review, permitting, inspections, complaints, testing, billing, and payments in record management systems.
• Assists citizens and other City departments with code interpretations and information when requested, prepares written documents, and maintains files.
• Ability to prepare and write reports that are clear, concise, and thorough.
• Reviews plans for compliance with State and local requirements for proposed new construction and renovations (site, occupancy, sprinkler, alarm, suppression, extinguishers) of existing facilities (repair, replacement, upgrade).

• Regulates, permits, inspects, and investigates all aspects of the installation, maintenance, removal, and complaints for underground storage tanks.

• Approves the location and access of aboveground storage tanks under State Fire Marshal jurisdiction. Reviews all City Business Acceptance documents produced by Zoning, reviews, and comments on all City alcohol license requests.

• Organizes, plans and coordinates targeted operations, unfamiliar circumstances, fire watch, after hours inspections, and joint operations.
• Produces, reviews, verifies, approves and/or signs administrative documents to be recorded, posted, attached, or filed (Occupant Load Certificate, Title 8 code alternative letters, variance requests, license applications).
• Attains and provides training/education required for certifications annually and triannual cycles. Provides guidance to other inspectors. Speaks publicly and participates in interviews for the media.
• Assists in the creation, modification, and enforcement of city ordinances (smoking, gated communities, food trucks), departments and office policies (FDC size, in person plan reviews).
• Approves locations and conditions for pyrotechnic displays, coordination of permitting, scheduling, and notification of public and private events.
• Conducts inspections and witness tests of new and existing facilities and the associated equipment related to the preservation of life and property.
• Participates in critical workforce assignments during natural and manmade disasters. Conduct inspections and evaluations of facilities and shelters before, during, and after emergency events.
• Issues parking citations for violations of fire lanes, fire hydrants and disabled parking across the City on public and private property.
• Participate in special projects such as review for safety measures, code compliance and alternative possibilities on filming sets, racetracks, large scale public and private events (Saint Patrick's and other festivals), weddings with unusual requests.
• Provides court testimony regarding fire code violations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires High School Diploma or GED; with one (1) year of experience in enforcement of Codes ( Preferred : Fire Prevention Codes Certification); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.   Successfully obtain a Georgia State Inspector Certification within twelve (12) months of employment ( Preferred : Certified as Georgia State Inspector).

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

Vision must be correctable to 20/20 in each eye with normal color vision; hearing ability normal or correctible for understanding normal conversational tones at all times; and ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds.

• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in the suppression of fires.
• Knowledge of fire and life safety codes.
• Knowledge of building construction, plumbing, fire alarm and suppression systems, and fire extinguishers.
